Steps for Engaging Parents and Caregivers

Step 1: Introduce parents to safe firearm storage.

The Parent Flyer is for all parents or guardians, whether they own a gun or not. It highlights the importance of secure firearm storage and provides simple, tangible steps any parent or guardian can take to make their home, school, and community safer. Looking for ways to share the flyer? Check out our prewritten emails, social media posts, and other content that you can customize and send to introduce people to this resource.

Step 2: Prepare parents for the winter holidays.

The Holiday Flyer helps parents and guardians prepare themselves, their families, and their friends for the holiday season by encouraging safe firearm storage. The holidays are a time full of joy, gatherings, and travel. They can also bring children into contact with unfamiliar environments and people — and sometimes risks. This flyer gives parents and guardians a simple checklist that they can use to make sure secure firearm storage is part of the conversation leading up to holiday events. This is not always an easy conversation to have, but it’s an essential part of keeping kids safe, especially when they’re with people who aren’t used to having children around. Below, you’ll find prewritten emails, social media posts, and other customizable content that you can use to introduce people to the Holiday Flyer.

Step 3: Encourage conversation among parents.

Many parents want to start the conversation about safe firearm storage, but they aren’t sure where to begin. The Parent Conversation Flyer can help. It includes tips on what parents can do at home and with friends and neighbors to start talking about safe gun storage and ensure a safe environment for their children. It even includes sample conversation starters — simple models for a quick text or an in-person conversation with other parents about firearm storage. To help you share this information with parents in your school district, we’re also including prewritten emails, social media posts, and other customizable content that you can use to introduce the Parent Conversation Flyer.

Additional steps will be released throughout the 20242025 school year. Be sure to check back for more!
